"Tom Paine's Common Sense, which appeared in early 1776 and became the most popular pamphlet in the American colonies did this."
'This' being: "to find language inspiring to all classes, specific enough in its listing of grievances to charge people with anger against the British, vague enough to avoid class conflict among the rebels, and stirring enough to build patriotic feeling for the resistance movement."
What be this quothing? This be quotes from the history enlightenment novel A People's History of the United States. In this context, Howard Zinn was refuring to Paine as the author of Common Sense, author who struck up the masses and inspired the spirit of battle. But I don't want to talk about the Paine. I wish to indulge in the Paine that caused pain; beautiful, hour-glass, pain.
Tom Paine the corset maker.
